A Holocaust survivor who helped rescue many others was honored Thursday by B'nai B'rith International in Riverdale.

Berta Davidovitz Rubinsztejn, 92, was a young woman when she fled to Hungary in the 1930s, escaping the Holocaust. She then went undercover and joined Zionist Youth Movement, where she carried out underground rescues and smuggled weapons.

She also helped identify orphaned children and put them on trains to safety. One of the 10 children she personally rescued, Meir Brand, attended the ceremony.

Rubinsztejn says she is very happy to be honored for her work and was moved to tears as speakers shared their stories of how she inspires them.
