Firefighters and first responder continued Sunday night to battle the wildfire in Greenwood Lake.
The "Jennings Creek fire" was burning along the New York-New Jersey border.
The potential danger turned fatal Saturday when recent Ramapo High School graduate Dariel Vasquez died after a tree fell on him as he battled the flames.
Vasquez worked on the wild land fire crew for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Although it began to rain on Sunday night, authorities said it would be of little help.
"Hopefully, this little bit of precip [will] give them a break for a day of so, but it's, by far, not going solve the problems we got going on either in New Jersey nor New York," said New Jersey Forest Fire Services Chief Bill Donnelly.
According to authorities at Sunday's news conference in New Jersey, there were about 2,500 fires burning throughout New York state and New Jersey.
The most threatening is the "Jennings Creek fire" which was burning thousands of acres from New Jersey south to Greenwood Lake.
Donnelly said Sunday night that it was 0% contained.
