Six people were forced onto the street last night after fire engulfed their Mount Vernon home.
Fire officials say they got a call around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday about a blaze at 500 Locust St.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy fire coming from the first floor of the two-story single-family home and then quickly spread to the second floor. About 18 firefighters were able to fight the flames from the inside, and it took around an hour to get it all under control. "There was a lot of fire when we got here. It was an aggressive attack, we knocked it down, and just did our searches," says Mount Vernon Assistant Fire Chief Michael Corrado.
None of the people living at the home or the firefighters were hurt, but the family dog suffered injuries and later died.
Red Cross is now helping the fire victims relocate.
There is no word on the exact cause yet, but fire officials say it appears to be accidental.
