The Newark Board of Education has taken a major step toward expanding school capacity in the East Ward, authorizing the district to seek state approval for a new 30-year lease to build Riverfront Elementary School.

The proposed 151,295-square-foot facility—slated for the intersection of Freeman Street, Fleming Avenue and Christie Street—is designed to accommodate approximately 667 students. If all state approvals are met, the school is scheduled to open in fall 2028.

"As someone who grew up in the Ironbound, I understand the importance of strong neighborhood schools," said Superintendent Roger León. "Riverfront Elementary School responds to the needs of this growing community and reflects the promise of what our students deserve."

The project includes several modern features tailored for both students and the surrounding neighborhood, including four instructional floors, specialized classrooms for STEM, a 10,300-square-foot protected rooftop and a full gymnasium.

Board of Education President Hasani K. Council emphasized that while the project is in its early stages, the authorization signals a commitment to "thoughtful planning and transparency." The 30-year lease agreement includes a provision that would allow the Board to purchase the property for a nominal fee at the end of the term.

The new school aligns with the district's ten-year strategic plan, "The Next Decade: 2020–2030," which addresses rising enrollment projections in Newark's East Ward.

The district must now secure approvals from the New Jersey Commissioner of Education, the Local Finance Board and the Office of the State Comptroller. Once those reviews are complete, the Board will conduct a final review of the lease terms and total costs before giving the ultimate go-ahead for construction.
