Crews contain multiple wildfires along I-195 in Jackson Township
The fires disrupted traffic Monday afternoon on I-195.
New Jersey Forest Fire Service crews have contained a series of wildfires that disrupted traffic Monday afternoon along I-195 in Jackson Township.
The fires broke out between mile markers 20 and 25. As firefighters worked to bring the fires under control, multiple lanes of the interstate were shut down, then reopened Monday evening just after 5 p.m.
The NJ Forest Fire Service deployed multiple engines to help extinguish the fires. The blazes erupted as fire crews throughout the state are conducting prescribed burns to help manage the buildup of forest fuels that may contribute to the start and spread of wildfires.
"By actively eliminating sources of fuel that exacerbate forest fire risks through a prescribed fire program, the Forest Fire Service reduces risk to New Jersey residents, visitors and the environment," the NJ Forest Fire Service said on social media.
The exact cause of the Jackson Township wildfires remains under investigation.
