The Orange County Legislature postponed a vote in Goshen Tuesday evening that was supposed to decide whether to take legal action to block the expansion of the Hasidic village of Kiryas Joel.
Monroe leaders voted last week to give up 164 acres for the Hasidic village to build high-density housing.
Orange County legislators voted at the start of Tuesday's special meeting to hold their Kiryas Joel lawsuit talks behind doors. The crowd had hoped leaders would openly discuss the topic.
Critics say they went to the meeting because the growth is unsustainable and will eventually affect the entire county.
"They're only starting with Monroe Woodbury but it's going to continue throughout the county and that's not right. We all pay our taxes. We all pay high taxes and I'm tired. I've had enough," says Debbie Bragado, of Monroe.
Critics have tried to stop the rapidly growing ultra-Orthodox community's expansion plans for years.
Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said last week that unless county leaders decide to sue, the decision by Monroe leaders to give Kiryas Joel more land will likely hold.
The new meeting is scheduled to be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
