Two firefighters were hurt and 30 people were left homeless Saturday morning when an apartment building on Saratoga Avenue in Yonkers was ravaged by fire.

Firefighters say the blaze started in the basement of the four-story building at 50 Saratoga Ave. and raced up a pipe.

Many tenants were awakened by the blaze and ran out of the burning building in their pajamas. Firefighters rescued an elderly woman who was asleep in her bedroom, as well as several pets.

Two firefighters suffered first- and second-degree burns when an electrical panel inside the building exploded. They have been treated and released from the hospital.

The neighboring building at 48 Saratoga Ave. lost power. Thirteen of the building?s residents had to be evacuated after falling debris left it too dangerous to occupy. In addition, seven other apartments on the block had their power cut off.

The Red Cross provided assistance to 17 people who were displaced by the fire.
