A Putnam County man is accused of keeping more than 30 dogs in "neglected conditions."

Kevin Bergeson, 64, has been arrested and charged with 34 counts of animal cruelty.

The investigation began after the Putnam County SPCA received a complaint concerning a large number of dogs at a home in Patterson.

"As a result of the investigation, approximately 34 dogs, consisting primarily of Labrador retrievers and several French bulldogs, were identified and evaluated. Veterinary examinations conducted found the majority of the dogs to be severely emaciated and showing signs of neglect (urine scalding, skin infections, foul odor, and dirty/infected ears)," the Putnam County SPCA wrote in a press release.

The SPCA alleges that multiple animals were kept in conditions inconsistent with acceptable minimal standards of care, including alleged deficiencies relating to basic nutrition, sanitation, medical attention, housing and overall animal welfare, according to the Putnam County SPCA.

News 12 called a number listed for Bergeson online. It went to voicemail.

A New Chance Animal Rescue is helping as the animals recover. The dogs will eventually be up for adoption.

The rescue is currently in need of foster homes for the dogs. If you are interested in helping, you can visit the website HERE.
