Federal investigators say searchers have located wreckage of a vessel believed to be the cargo ship El Faro in deep waters east of the Bahamas.
The El Faro disappeared Oct. 1 with 33 crew members during Hurricane Joaquin. Croton native Richard Pusatere was working as an engineer on the ship when it vanished.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board says the next phase starting as early as Sunday would involve preparing to send a remotely operated deep ocean vehicle to confirm the wreck's identity some 15,000 feet beneath the waves.
The agency says a Navy vessel reported finding wreckage "consistent with a 790-foot cargo ship" Saturday afternoon in 15,000 feet of water around the ship's last known position. It says the wreck was intact and upright on the seabed.
Investigators say they hope to recover the ship's "black box" for clues about what happened.
