Lawmakers are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to block the conversion of warehouses into ICE detention facilities.
The group of 67 local leaders sent a letter to the governor last month, urging her to block the conversions, following reports of a potential warehouse turned ICE detention center coming to Orange County.
News 12 obtained federal lease documents that reveal plans for an "ICE facility" at 800 Corporate Blvd. in the Town of Newburgh.
The town supervisor, Orange County legislators and Rep. Pat Ryan signed the letter to the governor.
Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha issued a statement that read, in part, "It is only due to the vigilance of local residents that the matter was brought to light, and given the position of the town as well as the county legislature in not wanting local resources to be used towards a conversion for an an inhumane purpose, it’s imperative that the Governor steps in and makes an executive order to stop all local resources being used for the purpose of such conversions.”
