New York City’s first recreational cannabis dispensary is set to open Thursday in Lower Manhattan, but there are important policies to keep in mind if you plan on getting on line.
Housing Works Cannabis Company, located at 750 Broadway, is set to open to the public at 4:20 p.m. The dispensary is a nonprofit that says it aims to support people experiencing homelessness, people with HIV/AIDS and other groups of people in need.
Attorney Michael Bass says to be aware of certain restrictions under the new laws before walking in or out of a dispensary.
“If you wait in line tomorrow and you are able to purchase a cannabis product, that doesn't magically make you licensed to sell cannabis products. So, under the law, you can share cannabis with another adult that's 21 years and older, but you cannot sell it and you're not licensed to sell it just because you are in possession of it,” he says.
Another key takeaway is that it is illegal under federal law to bring any purchases of cannabis products across state lines. It is meant to be consumed in New York.
All proceeds from dispensary sales will be directed to Housing Works' efforts to help formerly incarcerated New Yorkers.
