As wind chills reach dangerous lows, homeless shelters in Yonkers are adding beds to keep homeless people off of the streets.

The Sharing Community is a church-sponsored, community-based organization in Yonkers. It operates over 18 programs that cater to the homeless, hungry and ill residents of southwest Yonkers.

"No one has to be outside. We take in everybody, so you've got somewhere to go. It's a good feeling to know we're here so nobody has to be outside, nobody freezes," says Jasper Cokely, client care supervisor at the Sharing Community.

On extremely cold nights, members from the Yonkers Central Church of God deliver soup to the shelter. "It's a blessing for the church to give to this community, we just want to reach out and help," says Natasha Wedderburn, church volunteer.

Alan Garland stays at the Sharing Community and is just one of many who are thankful for it. "I'd probably be in a Metro-North train station or a bus or somebody's exit area in a building, or something like that," says Garland.

The shelter is open 24 hours a day.
