6 people displaced after Mount Vernon house fire
Neighbors were in tears after Chief Juan Peralta said officials deemed house number 312 to be unsafe to live in after a fire broke out there Monday morning.
Six people were displaced after a house fire in Mount Vernon on Monday.
It was an emotional day for residents who live on South Third Avenue.
"My heart goes out to them," says neighbor Cheryl G.
Neighbors were in tears after Chief Juan Peralta said officials deemed house number 312 to be unsafe to live in after a fire broke out there Monday morning.
"We received a call at 8:38 this morning and companies arrived five minutes later. About 10 mins later, we had the fire under control," Peralta says.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, the chief says the flames were mainly coming out of the attic.
"Fire was knocked down. The primary search was negative and companies started to do overhaul," Peralta says.
The chief says no one was hurt. However, one resident tells News 12 he was inside the home when the fire started.
"I was getting ready for work," says the resident, who wants to remain anonymous.
The fire chief also says two cats and a dog are believed to have escaped the home.
Red Cross workers were seen assisting those who were displaced.
Cheryl says she's struggling to believe the scenario.
"To see a house that so many people lived in, it's a disaster," Cheryl says.
