A Yonkers principal says the addition of a piano to the school's hallway has helped the struggling school.
Roosevelt High School was recently taken off a list of struggling schools in Yonkers. Many credit the piano to be a key motivator.
Edward DeChent, the principal at Roosevelt High School, says he knew the piano would inspire students.
"Music calms people," says DeChent. "Students with musical ability also do better in school."
He says once the piano arrived, students began to show interest and started playing.
Senior Justice Medina, who plays in the morning before classes begin, says the piano helps to calm students, especially during stressful testing weeks.
"They come hear this music playing, it makes them more calm," says Medina.
Some students say playing the piano has allowed them to become mentally prepared for a day of learning.
"When I'm pressing down on the keys, my mind, it gets ready for the school day," says freshman Daniel Mirabel.
DeChent says a state grant paid for the piano.
