Officials at Yonkers Public Schools say three staff members from different facilities have tested positive for coronavirus - only two weeks into the remote learning school year.
The cases were reported at VIVE School, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy and Yonkers Early Child Academy.
The new cases bring the total number of staffers testing positive for COVID-19 to nine.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin Quezada says that the number is extremely low for a district the size of Yonkers, saying in part, “When you think about nine cases, that represents less than a quarter of a percent of cases. He went on to say, "Our district brings on a daily basis approximately 4,000 employees and contractors into our schools."
Despite the new positive cases, Quezada says the district is still on track to begin hybrid learning on Oct. 5. "Our families expect that our schools will reopen, and we are working day and night to ensure that we do that,” says Quezada.
The Yonkers Council of PTA issued a statement saying in part, "It's disappointing and frustrating, although not surprising, that we are seeing COVID cases within Yonkers Public Schools. YCPTA will continue to keep our parents informed with facts and accurate data, without sensationalizing it, so that when school starts on October 5, 2020, each family can make an informed decision."
Yonkers school officials say they are still committed to having all in-person classes this year with guidance from the state and the CDC.
