Lifeguards ordered swimmers at a New Rochelle beach to go back to the shore on Sunday after some people claimed they saw a shark fin on the water.
"A patron came up to me when I was [sic] walking on the beach and they said they saw like a fin in the water, and they pointed it out to me, and I saw it," said Glen Island Beach lifeguard Max Pitocci. "There wasn't much panic...we just kind of like blew the whistles for them to come in."
Beachgoers told News 12 what they witnessed was "frightening."
"We came to the beach, I guess it was around at 2 o'clock, and everyone was standing at the shoreline because they were saying there was baby sharks in the water. It wasn't clear if there was one or more, and they wouldn't let anyone go in the water," said Maria Tirone-Winston, of New Rochelle.
"I was like, 'oh my God, it's a shark!' Because you saw the fins. But then everybody around us was like, 'no, it's a stingray'...It was very, very close to the swimmers. So then we noticed the lifeguards were like,...'everybody out the water,' said beachgoer Tren'ness Woods-Black.
Park Rangers and Westchester County Parks Department workers on the scene would not confirm or deny whether there was a shark or sharks in the water. However, beachgoers were allowed to remain on the sand after the water was declared off limits.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
It was not immediately clear as of Sunday night if the beach would reopen to swimmers on Monday.
News 12 was still waiting as of Sunday night for updated information and/or confirmation from Westchester County Police, Westchester County Parks Department and from the New Rochelle Police Department.
