A driver was killed overnight in Stony Point after losing control of an SUV and crashing into the top floor of a building, police said.
Kurt Mulligan, the chief of the Stony Point Fire Department, said the driver was headed north when he lost control at Liberty and Teneyck streets. The SUV jumped a curb, went airborne across a parking lot and landed on the top floor of a building – damaging the chimney before falling back to the ground.
Five people were inside the apartments and got out unharmed.
Police confirmed that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
People in Stony Point who spoke with News 12 said they were not surprised to hear about the crash.
“People got to slow down when they're driving. They cannot speed anywhere. This is what happens," said Tim Donough.
It was not immediately clear if speed was a factor in the crash.
