The community is honoring the life of Newark Police Detective Joseph Azcona, who was killed in the line of duty on March 7.
A balloon release took place at Carteret Street and Broadway, where Azcona was killed. A memorial to the fallen detective sits nearby.
Officials say that Azcona was shot and killed by a 14-year-old boy. Another police officer was injured in the shooting.
Azcona is said to have had an impact on the city and far beyond. Community members say that something needs to be done to prevent something like this from happening again.
"He was a phenomenal street cop and he became a detective within almost a few years after that. And his crew, there's not many out there like them and those guys they're hurting today too," says Newark Police Sgt. Heriberto Figueroa.
Azcona’s funeral will be held Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. A wake will be held on Thursday.
