People outside of the Ardsley Post Office spoke with News 12 on Tuesday about being victims of check washing scams.
Check washing is when someone intercepts a check and alters it. It can include changing the name of the person the check was written to, the amount and the memo.
Both Marci Meyer and Sarah Blushi, who used the mailbox directly outside of the post office, say they were both victims of the scam.
In Meyer's case, a $100 check she had mailed was intercepted.
She then found out the figure had been "washed" and rewritten to say $400.
People who asked to remain anonymous also detailed having money and gift cards stolen when using the mailboxes.
One woman News 12 spoke with says she sent a letter to her friend in Florida with no cash a couple of months ago.
Upon its arrival in Florida, the letter had arrived already torn open.
News 12 contacted a spokesperson with the United States Postal Service, who declined to comment.
The United States Postal Inspection Service urges check senders to use gel pens when signing checks, as the ink is more difficult to remove.
