The City of Yonkers marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks Friday by honoring 46 residents who lost their lives during and after the tragedy.
The annual remembrance ceremony paid tribute to victims of the attacks, service members and those who later died from illnesses linked to their response and recovery efforts.
For the first time, Mayor Mike Spano presented pieces of steel from the World Trade Center to Yonkers first responders, recognizing their service and sacrifice.
The ceremony concluded with first responders, elected officials and family members tossing flowers into the Hudson River in honor of those who were lost.
“Those that attacked us that day were terrorists, and those who defended us that day were heroes,” Spano said during the event.
