The political firestorm surrounding the fundraising efforts of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and their alleged ties to Putnam County Democrats is intensifying, but both sides are denying any wrongdoing.
The mayor is accused of funneling money to Democratic candidates through campaign committees in a failed bid to help his party take over the state Senate in 2014.
Financial records show that between 2009 and 2013, the Putnam Democrats never had more than $5,000 in their coffers. But in 2014, that number jumped to over $640,000.
Louis Epstein, a vice chair of Putnam's Democratic committee, was quoted recently in the New York Times as saying, "We were told, before we got it, how it was going to be used." However, he denies that his actions violated any laws.
