A proposed law in New York state could make it illegal to leave children along in cars.
According to public safety awareness website KidsAndCars.org, about 38 children a year die from heat-related symptoms after being trapped inside vehicles.
Earlier this week, the state Senate unanimously voted to make it a crime to leave a child under the age of 8 alone in a car.
On Thursday, an Orange County woman was arrested after police say she left her two small children in a running car while she shopped at a Wal-Mart in Monroe. She was charged with child endangerment.
Under the law, first-time offenders would be fined up to $50. Second and third violations within a period of 18 months would carry higher fines of up to $250.
The bill will head to the state Assembly for consideration.
