The end of an era is approaching -- the last remaining span of the old Tappan Zee Bridge is coming down.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo led a boat tour on Friday under the new bridge, as crews were out removing the remaining east and west sections of the old bridge.
Portions of the east span were blown up in January. Its pieces are still in the process of being lifted out of the water and onto barges. The 600-foot left span made up of 11 million pounds of steel is being lowered onto barges to be dismantled. Both parts will be salvaged by Tappan Zee Constructors, the company that built the bridge.
Cuomo discussed the challenges and successes of constructing the adjacent Mario Cuomo Bridge. "It was like whack-a-mole. Every day you wake up and there's another problem," he said. Yet, he said, the project was done under budget in only four years.
It could take about two weeks for both the east and west sections of the old bridge to be completely taken down. It is then, Cuomo tells residents, that there will be an unobstructed view of the new Mario Cuomo Bridge as promised
