A white Jeep Liberty plunged into the water near the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers Monday morning.
Authorities say the 26-year-old male driver was headed north near Yonkers Avenue when he lost control, turned into the guardrail and launched into the river.
Westchester County police had said the driver might have been trying to avoid hitting a disabled vehicle in the roadway when it plunged into the water. They now say that speed is to blame for the accident.
Police say the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, escaped the crash unharmed.
The incident caused two northbound lanes on the Bronx River Parkway to temporarily close at around 7:30 a.m. as crews worked to pull the Jeep from the water. All lanes have since been reopened.
The driver was issued a summons for speeding.
