More than 50 New Rochelle students received free haircuts as they prepared to head back to school.

Better Way New York partnered with the New Rochelle Police Department and local barbershops to provide the free cuts for children attending local elementary schools.

The event took place at Maciel's Barbershop and Tres Golpes Barbershop.

Organizers said the annual effort is about more than just haircuts.

"It's a bigger city, but it's a small tight-knit community, so being able to support one another, finding barbershop owners that are willing to donate the time and give away free haircuts, and police willing to show up, give out free gifts and just talk and have a good time. This is the small community that New Rochelle really is at its core," said Lt. Robert Johnson, commanding officer of the P.A.C.T. Unit.

Organizers said events like the haircut drive help bring the community together while giving students a confidence boost before the first day of classes.

This was the sixth year of the event.
