The family of Richard "Ricky" Christopher says the NYPD officer was fatigued from working many overtime hours leading up to the wrong-way crash that took his life.
Christopher's family says the 32-year-old Army veteran was on his way to work at the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx when he crashed head-on into 59-year-old James DeVito, of Airmont. The crash occurred along the New York State Thruway in Suffern.
Autopsy reports indicate that there were no drugs or alcohol in Christopher's system. Full toxicology results will not be available for a few weeks.
The family revealed to News 12 that they recently learned Christopher's girlfriend was pregnant.
Flags were flown at half-staff Thursday at the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx in memory of Christopher.
A wake will be held for Christopher on Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Higgins Funeral Home in New City. A service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m., with his burial to follow at Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery in New Hempstead.
