A house in Monsey was damaged Tuesday afternoon after what officials believe was a lightning strike that sparked a fire at the property on Holland Lane.

Emergency crews responded around 4:40 p.m. after reports of smoke and flames coming from the front of the home. Nearly 35 firefighters responded to the scene and brought the fire under control within about 40 minutes.

According to Gary Rothschild, a captain with the Monsey Fire Department, firefighters had to remove part of an exterior wall to contain the flames. Despite the damage, he said the quick response helped limit the impact.

“Beyond that, the damage is limited to minor smoke damage,” Rothschild said.

Officials said the fire appears to have been caused by a lightning strike, though the investigation remains ongoing.

A notice posted on the front door of the home states that the property is not safe to occupy. It is unclear how many people were inside when the fire started, but officials said everyone made it out safely and no injuries were reported.
