Test blasting at the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project will take place Wednesday before routine daily blasting begins next week.
The test blasting was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed until Wednesday.
Routine blasting is expected to begin Monday and continue intermittently through January, with up to three blasts per day anticipated between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Blasting will not take place on weekends.
Each blast will last less than one second, although residents near the site may hear air horn signals before and after each blast, according to a notification from the City of Hoboken.
The controlled blasting is the next step in excavation work as contractors work to reach a final depth of approximately 130 feet. Crews recently reached bedrock about 80 feet below street level, according to the Gateway Program.
Blasting will be contained within the shaft to minimize impacts at the surface.
The Gateway Development Commission established the Hudson Tunnel Project Noise Abatement Program to help reduce construction-related impacts on nearby residents.
Eligible property owners may qualify for upfront funding to replace existing windows with noise-reducing windows, install air conditioning units so windows can remain closed, and replace sliding glass doors with noise-reducing alternatives.
Only owners of residential properties within the impact zones identified in the Final Environmental Impact Statement Record of Decision are eligible for funding.
Residents can check their eligibility and apply through the Gateway Program's website.
