A student was taken to the hospital Friday after being injured by an unidentified “sharp object” during an altercation at Newburgh Free Academy’s North Campus, according to school officials.
News 12 initially received a tip that a 14-year-old student had been stabbed. However, the district has not confirmed the student’s age or whether the injury was a stabbing.
In a message sent to families, faculty and staff Friday afternoon, co-Principal Matteo Doddo said a school nurse was called to a bathroom that morning to treat a student with a cut on their arm.
The nurse determined the injury was serious enough to require transportation to the hospital for further treatment.
According to Doddo, the student initially reported that the injury was accidental.
School and district officials launched an investigation to determine what happened and whether the injury resulted from an accident or an altercation.
“Based on our initial investigation, the district has determined that the student was injured by an unidentified sharp object during an altercation between students,” Doddo wrote.
The district said students involved would be held to the standards outlined in its code of conduct and that it would cooperate with any police investigation.
The type of object involved, the student’s current condition and whether any charges have been filed have not been disclosed.
News 12 reached out to the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and police for additional information and is awaiting responses.
