New York City's new trash can rules went into effect Tuesday, the Department of Sanitation announced.
Homeowners and owners of buildings with up to nine residential units must use an official NYC bin for their trash.
DSNY officials say the rodent-resistant bins are designed to keep the streets cleaner and work with new garbage truck equipment that makes collection easier and safer for workers.
The bins are sold at Home Depot locations across the city.
Officials warn that those who don't comply will be issued summonses and $50 fines.
