The heat is back across New York City, and officials are reminding residents to take precautions as temperatures and humidity create dangerous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory until 9 p.m. as feels-like temperatures climb across the region.
Despite the heat, many people spent the day at Pelham Bay Park walking, exercising and playing sports. City officials say it’s safe to enjoy the outdoors, but only if you take the proper precautions.
New Yorkers are encouraged to:
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Wear sunscreen and lightweight clothing.
Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
Be cautious when touching playground or outdoor workout equipment, which can become dangerously hot.
The city’s “Cool It! NYC” map can help residents find drinking fountains, spray showers, shaded areas and cooling centers nearby.
“I would say don’t go out there running a marathon,” said parkgoer Carmen. “Honestly, if you have to run, do it early so that you’re not faced with as much humidity during the peak hours.”
The city has also deployed its mobile cooling vans and opened hundreds of cooling centers to help New Yorkers beat the heat.
Officials remind everyone to check on elderly neighbors, young children and anyone without access to air conditioning during periods of extreme heat.
