Suffolk County Police rescued a 15-year-old Shirley boy who became trapped in muddy water inside Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge Sunday night.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call at about 7:27 p.m. from the 15-year-old, who reported he was stuck in mud near an offshoot of the Carmans River after becoming lost in the woods after dark.

Aviation officers searched the area from the air while the teen remained on the phone with a 911 dispatcher using his cellphone flashlight to signal the helicopter. Once he was located, aviation officers guided Seventh Precinct patrol officers and Emergency Service Section units to his position.

Moore was pulled from the mud at approximately 8:25 p.m. He was escorted out of the preserve and transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.
