Gov. Mikie Sherrill wants an overhaul of New Jersey Transit's website and app so that riders have real-time updates. She also wants cleaner buses, trains and station stops, along with better lighting in stations.

“On multiple occasions, I had that experience where I’m standing on the platform and it says my train is coming and it’s nowhere in sight and that lack of information can make you late for meetings. It can really impact your ability to get home on time," Sherrill said.

The governor says riders deserve consistency and efficiency.

This plan for improvements comes along with those already in the works, including work to open the Portal North Bridge and the purchase of 250 new buses and 40 new rail cars.

She signed an executive order in Secaucus, setting a deadline of 45 days for New Jersey Transit to report back with a plan for improvements.

The executive order includes two parts.

The first part directs the Commissioner of Transportation to develop a plan to improve the system. Sherrill stated that these improvements should focus on cleanliness, accessibility, safety and communication.

The NJ Transit customer advocate will hold three public meetings and develop a public survey to get input from customers.

After the plans are improved, NJ Transit will have until June 22 to start implementing the improvements.
