Planning a trip on mass transit around the tri-state often requires downloading different apps and making plenty of transfers.
One app is offering an all-in-one approach, using artificial intelligence to optimize commuting through different agencies.
Commuting from News 12 New Jersey headquarters in Edison to Journal Square in Jersey City requires a bus ride to Metuchen Station, a train ride to Newark Penn Station and then a PATH ride to Journal Square.
Instead of sketching the trip route on multiple apps and figuring out which train to take when, Citymapper by Via allows customers to plan their commute in one place.
“It’s really nice to have a one-stop platform where you are not responsible for figuring out how to get from Point A to Point B, or Point B to Point C,” said Via chief product officer Nithya Sowrirajan.
The app uses AI to track cancellations, delays and other advisories and alert travelers. It also offers a commuting cost estimate.
Today, I really wanted to go to World Trade Center because I was familiar that there was a PATH station there,” Sowrirajan said. “But it told me that there were mechanical problems with the train coming into Newark, and that it was running a lot less frequently. So, I used Journal Square instead.”
The app is available in over 400 places worldwide. The coverage for New York metro commuters extends into the tri-state. There are also ways to customize the AI-generated itinerary.
“Maybe I’m wearing some high heels - I like to use the step-free option,” said Via Global PR Lead Sara-Jessica Dilks.
“You can also choose where there are elevators,” Sowrirajan said. “So, if you need that facility or you’re helping a friend with a disability, you have a really good way to plan your journey for that.”
Users still need to buy their tickets on separate transit apps, such as NJ Transit, PATH, MTA or NYC Ferry.
