NJ Transit said the pilot is part of a broader modernization plan. That includes new eight‑foot‑high fare gates at Secaucus Junction and Newark Airport, an expanded fare‑pay card system and new mobile validation devices for train crews.
Officials said the goal is to protect fare revenue and support riders who already pay. Commuters said fairness and consistency remain important as they navigate daily travel.
