A Yonkers woman with relatives in Guinea is hoping their relatives don't fall victim to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
So far, the disease has taken the lives of more than 3,000 people.
Fatima Thiam says nobody in her family has been exposed to the virus, but people she grew up with have already died. She says every time she speaks to her family on the phone, she prays for good news.
Thiam has a teenage daughter along with several other relatives in the city of Conakry, about 600 miles from the heart of the deadly outbreak.
Thiam says precautions to prevent infection are being done, like shutting down schools and borders. But, she says the economy is suffering as a result. Hunger is also becoming a growing concern, because she says nobody wants to go outside to get the food.
She says there is a glimmer of hope in the U.S. and she hopes that modern medicine can combat the killer disease.
