A Yonkers mother whose newborn daughter was found dead in the Bronx Monday has been charged with murder.
Investigators say the baby was thrown from a window of a seven-story apartment building in the University Heights neighborhood.
Jennifer Berry, 33, was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. She lives on Gailmore Drive in Yonkers.
The baby's father reportedly lived in the Bronx apartment. Police had questioned and released him earlier in the investigation.
Berry reportedly told investigators that the baby was stillborn, but later changed her story.
The newborn's death was ruled a homicide by the city's chief medical examiner earlier in the day.
Investigators say the newborn girl still had her umbilical cord attached when she was thrown from a window at a West 183rd Street building at around 2:30 p.m. The newborn was found dead in a concrete courtyard behind the apartment building
New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson listed the cause of death as multiple blunt-force injuries.
According to a police source, the newborn was still alive when she was thrown out of the window.
Witnesses say the baby was found covered in a bloody sheet in an alley next to the building. The superintendent's wife made the discovery as she was sweeping around the alley.
Officials say surveillance cameras captured part of the newborn's fall, but police are not releasing the video.
