A funeral is being held in the Bronx for Lisa Grier, the 33-year-old Mount Vernon woman who was killed last month in what authorities say was a domestic violence attack.
Family, friends and community members gathered Saturday to remember Grier not for the way she died, but for how she lived — as an educator, a woman of faith and someone full of joy and compassion.
Grier was killed March 22 inside her home on 4th Street. Police say her longtime partner, 28-year-old Jovair Bryce, attacked her and now faces charges in connection with her death.
Loved ones say the tragedy has sparked renewed calls for awareness around domestic violence and recognizing warning signs. But at Saturday’s service, the focus remained on Grier’s impact on those around her.
“She was so beautiful, so bright, and the way she treated my daughter was just so special,” said Denise Benjerman, the mother of one of Grier’s students.
Bryce's legal case is still in its early stages in the legal system.
After the funeral, Grier will be laid to rest at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
