Yonkers Fire Commissioner John Darcy returned to his job Thursday after being suspended for a week.

Darcy was suspended for punching Fire Lt. Michael O'Connor at a holiday party at the Dunwooodie Golf Club in December.

The physical altercation began when O'Connor threw a cloth napkin and hit the commissioner.

"It directly hit me in the eyeball, knocked me out of the chair, I fell and I hit my head on the floor and was knocked unconscious," Darcy said.

Apologies were made between the two and a police investigation found no criminality.

"If I could go back in time and stop myself from getting hit in the eye and having the whole thing not happen, of course I'd much rather have that happen," Darcy said.

Lt. O'Connor was suspended for two days without pay and has not returned to work since, taking personal time.

Both Yonkers firefighter unions have taken a vote of "no confidence" in Darcy. The uniformed fire officers association, representing Lt. O'Connor, called the commissioner's actions "reprehensible" and want to see him fired.

However, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said he will not do that.
