Yonkers City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to ban the phrase "The Gates of Hell" from city communications.
Council President Chuck Lesnick says it is the first step toward removing the stigma associated with the abandoned Glenwood Power Plant and redeveloping the infamous building.
The abandoned building once generated electricity for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, but closed in the 1960s. The site has reputedly become utilized for brutal gang initiations, including savage assaults and rapes.
Some who attended the meeting expressed outrage that the building's owner is making money by renting the spot for a music video film crew.
"There has been a financial gain in the decay of this property," a woman at the meeting told News 12 Westchester.
What's in a name? Plenty when it's 'Gates of Hell'
