With gas prices climbing to an average of $3.95 per gallon in Westchester County, drivers are starting to rethink how — and when — they will fill up.

For some, the search for savings begins right at the pump.

At a Shell station in Yonkers, a simple sign-up can make an immediate difference. The company’s free loyalty program offers about 10 cents off per gallon — a small cut that can turn into real savings over time. On a typical fill-up, that might only mean a dollar or two back in your pocket, but for frequent drivers, it adds up quickly.

Others are taking a more strategic approach.

In Valhalla, one driver says she relies on Google Maps to compare prices before heading out, sometimes even adjusting her routine to fill up earlier in the week — when gas is often slightly cheaper. It’s a small shift, but one that reflects a growing awareness among drivers trying to stretch every dollar.

Apps are also becoming part of the equation.

At Fuelco, customers can save about 10 cents per gallon just by using the station’s app — another example of how technology is changing the way people shop for fuel. And for those already doing their weekly grocery runs, there may be even more savings to unlock.

Stores like ShopRite and Stop & Shop offer fuel rewards programs that let shoppers earn points on everyday purchases. Those points can then be redeemed at the pump, lowering the price per gallon. In some cases, those discounts can even be combined with existing gas station rewards — creating stacked savings for drivers willing to put in a little extra effort.

But that effort is part of the trade-off.

Not everyone is eager to juggle multiple apps, loyalty programs and timing strategies just to save a few dollars. For many, convenience still wins out over cost.

Still, as prices continue to rise, more drivers are starting to ask the same question - is it worth it?

For now, the answer depends on how far you’re willing to go to save.
