A memorial service has been planned in Yorktown for the 18-year-old who was shot and killed near her college campus in Chicago.

The announcement comes just days after Chicago police say they arrested the man they believe is responsible.

"The loss is just unimaginable," said Yorktown Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito.

Sheridan Gorman, 18, a Yorktown native and a freshman at Loyola University in Chicago, was fatally shot early Thursday near a beach close to campus. Chicago police say Gorman was walking with friends around 1:30 a.m. when a man approached the group and opened fire.

Monday coverage

Chicago police say Jose Medina-Medina was arrested Friday evening in connection with the shooting. Medina was supposed to be in court on Monday, but prosecutors in Chicago tell News 12 that he is in the hospital and did not appear in court. A detention hearing is now set for Friday.

Yorktown officials are now working to honor Sheridan.

"It'll be a celebration for her life," said Yorktown Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman. "That'll be the focus of it."

A memorial service is scheduled to be held Saturday, March 28, at 6 p.m. at the Jack DeVito Memorial Field.

The community is also showing up by lighting their porches green and sharing it on social media using #LightForSheridan.

"It's important to keep Sheridan's memory and her life alive and to never forget," said Esposito.

A dessert shop located in Mount Kisco, The Poppery, will be selling cake pops. The business says 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Sheridan's Memorial Fund.

Bakery owner Alexa DiPaterio sent a statement to News 12 about the effort.

"As a small business rooted in this community, we believe in coming together during the moments that matter most. In honor of Sheridan, whose life was taken far too soon, we are donating 100% of all cake pop proceeds to her memorial fund. This is simply our way of supporting her family, honoring her memory, and standing with our community during this incredibly difficult time," DiPaterio wrote.

The fundraiser is being held on Thursday, March 26 and on Friday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their shop in Mount Kisco.
