Family members confirm that a Major League Baseball prospect from Yonkers who was shot in the head last month has died.
Family and friends of 23-year-old Michael Nolan had stayed by his bedside at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, hoping for a miracle. But relatives say when doctors attempted surgery there was just too much damage.
Parents Donna and Jimmy Nolan say that while they knew the day would come, it does not make his death any easier. They say their son is now at peace.
Police say Nolan was shot in the head in a drive-by while standing in a Burger King parking lot on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers on Sept. 18.
Investigators say they believe Nolan was an innocent victim of what appears to be retaliation for an argument that took place two nights earlier over a drag race.
The Oakland A's, which drafted the 6-foot-7 left-handed pitcher, released a statement saying, "Michael will always be a member of the A's family and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
No arrests have been made in the shooting. Investigators say they are following up on a number of leads.
A relative says that Nolan's parents are donating his organs, so he will continue to live on.
Nolan's funeral will be held in Yonkers, although the date has not yet been determined.
Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Michael Nolan died from his injuries on Oct. 8. This was wrong, as Nolan was declared brain dead at that time. Later versions of this article have been corrected to reflect the accurate information.
