A Westchester woman is raising awareness about the challenges that people with gynecologic cancers face.
Jennifer Garam said she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was just 43 years old.
She said the diagnosis was daunting because she was single and lived alone at the time.
She initially struggled to find support after realizing that support groups weren't helpful for her.
The disheartening experience was a reason why she provided patient input for a GSK-sponsored survey that reveals the gaps in care and support that people with gynecologic cancers face.
"It's so important to raise awareness about cancer in general, but gynecologic cancers do not get as much attention as other types of cancer," Garam said.
Garam, who is in remission now, said the survey represents the first stage in GSK's "Your Cancer is our Challenge" initiative.
