While several local hospitals fight closure, the Westchester Medical Center board approved its 2007 budget Wednesday night, making way for another successful upcoming year. The approval means for a second year in a row the institution will be operating in the black. The outside management team led by president and CEO Michael Israel says the hospital is operating at a surplus, which enables it to make investments in bedside clinicians, technology and facilities. Israel says most importantly, they are reducing the hospital?s dependence on government support. The new budget will allow the hiring of additional nurses and expansion of the hospital. Richard Berman, the Chairman of the Board at Westchester Medical Center says the financial progress made allows the hospital to stay focused on delivering the best care possible to the 3 million people in its operating region.
