Environmental groups are asking that better testing be done to the public's drinking water and swimming areas.
Both the Waterkeeper Alliance and the nonprofit group Riverkeeper want residents to enjoy the Hudson River waters.
Riverkeeper, whose aim it is to make sure the water quality is suitable for drinking and recreational activities, released its annual water quality report, and the findings seem to indicate that more testing needs to be done.
The findings show that 20 percent of the time, the water quality in the Hudson Valley fails to meet federal standards for safe swimming and boating.
It says one reason for this is that water treatment plants get overworked after rainfall, causing water to have more bacteria and dirt.
Officials say that Croton Point Beach is the safest waters on the Hudson River, but if residents go down the river, the water may be more unsafe.
