Staffers and volunteers at the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary are working tirelessly to save approximately 40 dogs rescued from what one worker described as one of the worst cases of animal neglect she's ever seen.
"A lot of them were so matted they couldn't stand. You didn't know what was underneath all of that," said Samantha Wiltse, shelter director.
More than 100 dogs were rescued from a Brooklyn home after police responded to a call and found the 73-year-old homeowner dead inside.
Working alongside the organization, Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess or CARE, workers continue the process of shaving the animals' severely matted fur, feeding and providing medical care.
"This was one of the worst I've ever seen. I didn't see the actual house, but just seeing the animals that came out of it and the shape they were in, this was one of the worst houses we've dealt with." Wiltse said.
Although animal advocates are looking for foster homes for the rescued dogs, it could be months before any of them are medically and emotionally ready for permanent placement in forever homes.
