Crews have been able to continue working through this year's mild winter, unlike last year when work on the new bridge had to be suspended due to ice in the Hudson and the frigid temperatures.
Along with rising temperatures, the towers on the new span are also rising. Tappan Zee Constructors, the company that's building the $3.9 billion span, recently tweeted a picture of the final concrete crossbeam for the towers being set. Workers used the "I Lift New York" super crane, to place four 700-ton cross beams that will help support the future road deck of the main span in the middle of the river. The towers are now higher than the existing Tappan Zee Bridge's roadway.
Also, on the Westchester side, crews are now removing the temporary support structures that assisted with the installation of girders over the Metro-North Railroad tracks. Their removal will enable the installation of road deck panels in the coming months.
Meantime, work on the project's temporary cashless tolling system in Rockland continues and is expected to be activated this spring.
