More than 50 years after he served in the Vietnam War, a veteran from Elmsford says he is still fighting for disability benefits.

John Murphy is looking to get the government to award disability benefits to all Thailand-based veterans of the war who were exposed to the dangerous herbicide Agent Orange.

Murphy says he is doing OK, but exposure to Agent Orange has had a devastating effect on many veterans who were stationed in Thailand. The Elmsford man has lobbied New York's congressional legislators to co-sponsor a Senate and House bill that would grant presumptive status of herbicide exposure to those veterans.

At a town hall with seniors last month in White Plains, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand promised Murphy she would co-sponsor the legislation -- and she did a few days ago.

The goal is to get the bills out of committees for a full vote by both chambers and eventually to the president for his signature.

Murphy says he's reached out to Rep. Nita Lowey and Sen. Chuck Schumer to co-sponsor the legislation, but so far has not heard back.
