Vet’s body decomposes at VA morgue for 4 months
The body of an 87-year-old veteran was left to decompose at the VA morgue for nearly four months before his burial.
Korean War veteran Santos Colon, of Newburgh, died back on Nov. 2, but sources say his body was left at the morgue when no one showed up to claim his body.
Several workers contacted News 12 six weeks ago and confidentially described the details. The whistleblower did not speak on camera for fear of losing his job, but described a staffer oversight that resulted in the Libby Funeral Home not being contracted for Colon’s burial until Feb. 21.
At that point, News 12 was told that Colon's corpse was in the advanced stages of decomposition and starting to liquefy.

Colon is now buried at the VA National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
A source tells News 12 that Colon’s family has turned to the inspector general for the VA down in Washington, D.C to demand a full investigation.
A public affairs officer for the VA responded with a statement that said “the unfortunate incident is an isolated case and when it was discovered, it was addressed immediately with care and sensitivity to the veteran's family.” The statement blamed a performance issue for the incident and said changes were underway, and also mentioned that those responsible were being held accountable.
